Muddle of Mice Pouch. Tutorial and Pattern

Muddle of Mice Pouch. Tutorial and Pattern

I do have to say that I was very neglectful of taking pictures during the making of these mice.  I'm afraid some of my tutorials have pictures of the bees because of this.

Materials:
1/2 Yd Pink Fabric for ears and bias binding
12" Square Body fabric and Lining
1/2 Yd Light weight Fusible woven interfacing
       Thread to Match fabrics
9" Zipper to match bee back fabric (the zipper needs to be bigger than needed so don’t short yourself)

Paper Pattern: Cut out pattern pieces on solid line.

Preparing Fabrics: Prewash all fabrics used. Using manufacturers directions apply fusible interfacing to back of all fabrics.

Cut out all pattern pieces from fabrics following cutting directions on paper pattern.

Ears: Fold an ear in half right sides together, measure up 1" from straight edge of ear and 1/4"
from folded edge at bottom of ear. Stitch a dart from the bottom marking to the top marking.
Make sure to back stitch at each end. Repeat for all three remaining ear pieces.

Taking a pink ear that a body fabric ear, place right sides together and pin. Sew using a
1/4" seam allowance leaving open straight edge. Repeat for second ear.

Notch ears at out side curves for ease of turning. Turn ears right side out and press sewn edges
flat. Top stitch close to sewn edge.

Zipper: Mark zipper 1 1/2" to 2" from bottom on right side of zipper. Open zipper and with right
sides together hand baste mouse body to zipper starting with the bottom back of the body. Repeat
for other side of the body. Turn basted body/zipper over and repeat the process with the lining
making sure that the right sides of body and lining are together.

Using a zipper foot machine sew as close to the zipper teeth as possible through all layers.
Repeat for other side. Make notches in the curves to help with laying flat. Turn fabrics right side
out and press flat. Be very careful to keep the hot iron away from the plastic teeth. Top stitch
close to seam edge on both sides. Close zipper but DO NOT CUT ZIPPER AT THIS TIME.

Mouse Nose: Fold nose in half making a finger press mark at middle. Using the press mark pin
nose to body matching center at zipper and clipping body fabric where needed. Pin with zipper
closed than make sure to open zipper before sewing. Baste to body. Taking lining nose pin to body
in the same method making sure that right sides are together. Sew nose to body using a 1/4"
seam allowance through all layers. Make sure to back stitch at beginning and ending.
Cut excess zipper at TOP only. It is now anchored with the nose being sewed on. Turn nose right
side out and press nose flat against the body, pressing seam allowance toward nose. Top stitch
close to seam line alone the nose

Layer pouch bottom and lining bottom with wrong sides together, baste close to raw edge.
Matching centers at back and nose pin basted bottom to bee body and making sure that body
fabric is facing out. Sew in place back stitching at beginning and ending. Now it is safe to trim
zipper at the back of bee body.

Attaching Bias Binding: Pictures of attaching the bias to the pouch are included but to
keep from repeating tutorials already written a page from an earlier tutorial is attached to
explain the method used here. Please feel free to use desired personal methods for attaching
bias binding.

Cut a 45° angle at one end of the unfolded binding; with the

Lay the potholder, pocket side up and pin the binding, matching raw edges and having the 45 degree point facing to the left. Start sewing binding 3” to 4” from the bottom of that angle. Continue to sew around, stopping 3” from the starting angle cut edge. Remove from your sewing machine.

Place binding end under the starting angle cut edge. Mark on the binding end following the starting angle cut edge.

Unfold the binding end where the drawn line is.
Align the 1/2” marking on a ruler to the drawn line with the 1/2“ allowance to the right of the drawn line and cut. This adds 1/2” length to the marked line, allowing for a 1/4” seam allowance.

14. Unfold both ends of the binding, matching angled edges and pin. Fold the potholder in a little. There should be a 1/4” tail on each end (A). Sew, using a 1/4“ seam allowance. Finger press seam to one side. Refold binding (B). Finish sewing the binding down (C). Press binding away from body of potholder and toward the raw edge.

Fold binding over to the back side of potholder, pin in place and sew binding down by hand or machine.
