 DIY Tote Bags Ideas


Supplies

• 1/2 yard main fabric
• 1/2 yard interior fabric
• FQ contrast fabric
• FQ pocket interior fabric
• batting/wadding
• 2x wooden buttons
• 1 x magnetic bag closure
• 1 x zipper

Preparation

• Pre wash and shrink fabric
• Print owlbag PDF pattern, and assemble pages. Cut out pattern pieces.
• Baste batting/wadding to wrong side of interior bag pieces

Note: 1/4″ seam allowance unless otherwise stated


Sew flap to top of bag interior.


Sew side pieces to base of bag interior.


Sew interior together, right sides facing (rsf), by sewing the side/base piece to the front and back of bag interior. Affix one half of magnetic closure to flap and set aside.



Sew strap together (rsf). Turn right side out, press and top stitch.



Sew front pocket together (rsf), leave a gap for turning. Turn right side out, press and top stitch in place on the main front.


Sew back pocket together on sides and base, leaving a 1/4″ gap from the top. Press front seam allowance towards wrong side.



Press seam allowance towards wrong side on both main, back pieces. Insert zipper by sewing both sides of zipper with the wrong side of the zipper facing the right side of the pocket and with the right side of the zipper facing the right side of the exterior pieces. Continue past the start and end of zipper to sew the two back pieces together.


Sew main sides to main front and back(rsf).


Sew together side pockets (rsf) leaving a gap for turning.


Turn side pockets right sides out and top stitch in place along sides and base. Line up centre of pocket with centre of side piece. Leave 1/4″ gap from raw edge of base of bag front/back.Sew short edges of base piece to side pieces and then sew long edges to front.


Sew flap to back of bag.


Sew ear pieces wsf and then turn right side out.



Baste strap and ears to sides. Sew buttons on front and affix other half of magnetic closure to front.


Put main bag inside interior of bag (rsf) and sew around the top edge leaving a gap at the front for turning.


Turn right side out and topstitch close to the edge along sides and front.
