The corner is half the width of the total bucket ie. if the bucket is 4 inches square, the corner 'cutout' would be 2 inches. But since there is a fold instead of a seam allowance at the bottom of the bucket, you need to take off 1/4 inch. That's why in the tutorial there is a 2 x 1 3/4 cutout. So, if you were doing a 6 inch bucket, you would cut out a 3 x 2 3/4 inch cut out.
