Rainbow Rays is a foundation paper pieced pattern. This pattern is designed to be used as the top panel of a medium sized Open Wide Pouch (tutorial here: https://blog.noodle-head.com) as shown. On its own, this block completes at 12in x 4.5in (unfinished) and 11.5in x 4in (finished).
Pattern Notes:
- This pattern does not include detailed instructions on how to foundation paper piece. There is a great
paper piecing tutorial here: https://www.craftsy.com/post/foundation-paper-piecing-tutorial/
- The templates are already mirrored- no need to mirror them!
- I have included some tip & tricks with photos after the instructions. I hope they are helpful!
Instructions
1. Use the coloring sheets provided on page 4 to test out color schemes. A diagram is also included to help show how the sections fit together.
2. Print out the paper piece templates and label each piece by color. This helps to make sure they all end up in the correct place!
3. Sew each section (A-F) following the numerical order on the templates. Press after each piece.
4. Trim the side edges on each section. Do not trim the top & bottom edges yet.
5. Sew each of the sections together in alphabetical order.
6. Remove the paper & give it a good press!
7. Trim the block to 12in x 4.5in.
Tips & Tricks
Fabric Direction
The pattern is printed already mirrored. This means that you should place the wrong side of the fabric with the back side of the template. I also like to use tracing paper to paper piece- easy to line up the fabric! Perfect Points!
1. Put the pin through the first section, right at the printed point intersection
2. Next, take the adjacent section and place right sides together
3. Poke pin through the second layer aiming for the point intersection on the other piece. As shown, it
might take a few tries to get it lined up!
4. Pin the rest of the seam & sew. Once sewn, open the pieces and admire those pretty points!
5. Follow the same steps on the rest of the sections!
