DIY Scrappy Boxy Pouch

DIY Scrappy Boxy Pouch

I got my mother-in-law a Tula Pink coloring book for Christmas, and I know how much she loves art supplies, so I ordered some fancy colored pencils to go with it.  Somehow wrapping those pencils up in their boring original box just didn’t seem right, so I decided to sew up a scrappy boxy pouch.

And, luckily I remembered to snap a few pictures before she headed back home today, despite the fact that the weather wasn’t giving me the best lighting.

I used the Boxy Pouch tutorial from Pink Stitches.  I have had great success with that pattern in the past for gifts so it was a no brainer to use it again.

I chose to add her name with some embroidery, as I’ve done in the past, and phew…did I cut that close! Luckily it all worked out but I think I had all of my fingers crossed, as I sewed it all together, for luck. I also did some quilt as you go on the scraps I used in this one, which I think I found more tedious than it was worth. In the future I’ll piece first and then just quilt it all down to the batting at once.

In think what really helps set this bag apart though is the use of one of the 5″ squares from Lori Holt’s “Modern Minis” fabric combined with the little chicken print from 1canoe2.  Oh, and a classic metal zip never hurts either.  This was the last of my Christmas gift makes.  I just have one more plaid pillow to make for my living room and then I can just relax for the next few days.
