Today we bring you a super simple, drawstring leather bag DIY that can be sewn up by even the most novice of novices.
At first thought, sewing leather may seem like an unfathomable task. However, as long as you keep the project simple and pick a reasonably lightweight leather it is 100% achievable, even with a domestic machine!
Supplies // You will also need a decent pair of shears, leather machine needles and a few metres of cord for the drawstrings. If your machine does not have a walking foot, invest in a roll of double sided tape and tape your seams together before sewing (to stop them getting pulled out of place while you stitch).
The Steps //
1 - Cut out your leather. We cut a 60cm x 42cm rectangle (which gives you a bag slightly shorter than an A3 size). However you can pick pretty much any size you like!
2 - Fold the bag tops (the two shorter sides) over 5cm, and stitch down leaving a 4cm space for your cord to be pulled through.
3 - Fold bag into position, so that the raw edges of your bag tops are on the inside. Sew your side seams, ending when you meet the top bag stitch line - you may need to hand wind your machine at this point once you are tackling all four layers of leather! Remember to back-tack to keep your stitching nice and strong.
4 - Pull your cording thorough (see image), trim to length and knot.
Voila // This project is phenomenally easy, and a fantastic intro to sewing leather to help build your skills and confidence. Plus, the results are amazingly professional looking for the little amount of effort you have to put in - everyone is sure to be blown away by your leather-smithing abilities!
Go large for an oversized carry-all, medium for evening/occasional use or small for jewellery/gift bags.
